Donna joined the Blackstone Animal Clinic team in 2011, as one of our receptionists. She grew up and still lives in Blackstone; with her husband, a Chihuahua, Doodle Bug, and their calico cats, currently numbered at five. Working at an animal clinic, though, that number is subject to change at any time. She previously operated a wonderful cat rescue called Critter Care which is how Dr. Carr and she first became acquainted in 2003. Her hobbies include crafting, sewing, quilting, crocheting, and reading. She also loves being outside in the warmer times of year working in the yard or flower garden, or relaxing with a good book on the patio.
Kristin has been working at Blackstone Animal Clinic since 2015 as a receptionist and occasional veterinary assistant. She brought with her one year of great experience from a Richmond veterinary clinic and was hired on the spot while in an appointment with her cat, Saber! Kristen is now training to become a licensed veterinary technician. Her hobbies include riding four wheelers, fishing, camping, and cuddling her two cats, Riley and Saber, and her beagle, Biscuit. Remember… You never know when you are being interviewed!
Courtney is a 2017 Virginia Tech graduate with a Bachelors of Liberal Arts & Human Sciences degree. Let’s Go, Hokies! Since graduating and then joining our team in August, she is continuing her education at Penn Foster to get her Veterinary Technician degree. Courtney doesn’t waste any time! Her passion for all sorts of animals, even reptiles and amphibians, began at a very young age. In her free time she enjoys hunting, fishing, softball, volleyball, and spending time with her cattle dog, Tuck.
Courteney and her husband, Hans, were long time clients of the clinic before we recruited her in 2011 as a receptionist. She graciously accepted and has been providing excellent customer service and organizing our team and files ever since.
Courteney's husband, Hans, is our much appreciated IT go to guy and fixer of all things computer related. If we can find job opportunities for their many feline companions, we will have the entire family on the payroll! Courteney is a William and Mary graduate and she considers herself lucky to be able to work in a place where her love of animals is fulfilled every day. When she is not working she cares for many wonderful cats and enjoys physical fitness. Courteney’s hobbies include reading, writing, animals, and mud runs.
Karen Wilson joined the Blackstone Animal Clinic family in 2004, bringing with her 6 years of veterinary office experience and 20 years of customer service experience. An animal lover since she could walk, Karen was thrilled to pursue a second career where she could draw upon her customer service skills and enter the veterinary world. She has found her “furever” home at Blackstone Animal Clinic, where she is blessed to have wonderful co-workers and clients.
Tammy Shumaker is our head technician. Her duties cross a vast area of skill sets including inventory management, surgery preparation and assistance, laboratory analysis and in-patient care. In other words, she directs the show in the back half of the hospital! Tammy is a native of Buckingham,Va and now resides in Farmville. She received both her undergraduate degree in Biology and her Master’s degree in Environmental Studies from Longwood College. Tammy worked with Dr. Carr in Appomattox during her college years and they reunited to open Blackstone Animal Clinic in 2003. Her hobbies include watching Roger Federer play tennis, softball, bowling, jewelry crafting and stained glass designing. Tammy shares her home with three fine hounds, a Chihuahua, several special needs cats and a sheep!
Ann is a native of Winchester, VA, and is a graduate of John Handley High School. She received her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Longwood College (University). She is retired from teaching and has been a loyal and very hardworking team member since 2009. She is our “go to” new employee trainer, partially because of her teaching temperament and knowledge, but primarily because she will make sure they learn how to do it right!
Caroline Cumbea has been working with the BAC team for a little over a year. She was born and raised in Victoria, Va. She is currently studying agriculture business at Southside Virginia Community College in Keysville, Va. At 5 yrs of age she began riding and has never stopped. She has enjoyed great competitive success with her horse Peyton, in the low jumper division, but now is training him to be a barrel racer! Caroline may be small, but she likes speed! Caroline has always had a love for all animals and the outdoors. She says that the best part about working at BAC is the family friendly staff and sharing the love of helping animals with others.
Taylor, a native of Keysville VA, worked in the animal field for several years before joining our team. Her previous job provided her with excellent animal work experience enabling her to adapt quickly to our clinic management and patient care. Taylor loves learning more about animals each day and she also enjoys reading, listening to music, taking her dog, Kahlua, to neat fun places, and spending time with her friends and family. She now resides in Crewe with Kahlua, and her cat, Willa.
Amber joined the team in 2016 and brought with her 6 years of very helpful veterinary clinic experience to BAC. We appreciate the long distance she travels to work as well and her attitude. Amber easily connects with and reassures both clients and pets. The veterinary world is her passion and she is pursuing a licensed veterinary technician degree. At home Amber has 15 dogs, 9 cats and two horses. During her free time she loves to ride horses and four wheelers, spend time with family and cuddle her fur babies. That’s a lot of cuddling!
Kelli has been with Blackstone Animal Clinic since 2014. She is one of our vet assistants but also enjoys helping the receptionists when needed. She is currently taking classes at community college and hopes to become a dental hygienist. Her hobbies include playing with her chocolate lab, Harlan, riding four wheelers, and hanging out with her friends.
Dr. Anne Wells Carr is a 1990 graduate of Virginia Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech. She and her husband Ron, have three boys, Nick, Ben, and Jay. She opened Blackstone Animal Clinic in 2003 and moved to the more spacious facility in 2014. Her professional areas of interest include preventative medicine, surgery and behavioral medicine. Outside of work she enjoys watching her boys play sports, horseback riding, competing in the hunter ring, and cheering on her Hokies! She considers it a tremendous honor to work with talented veterinarians and a dedicated, trustworthy support staff to offer the best pet care in our area.
Dr. Lenher’s love of veterinary medicine began at the age of 13 when she started volunteering at Wickford Veterinary Clinic in Wickford RI. After receiving her undergraduate degree from the University of Rhode Island, Dr. Lenher earned her doctorate from the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at Colorado State University in 2002. After graduation, Dr. Lenher spent a year in North Carolina for her internship. She then practiced in Charleston, S.C., before settling in the Richmond area. Her professional interests include preventive medicine, sports medicine, ophthalmology and dentistry.
Dr. Oswald is originally from New Jersey but has lived in Virginia for 25 years. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from UVA and her DVM from Va Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine at Va Tech, Class of 2002. She has concentrated on small animal practice since graduation. Her special interests include emergency/critical care, soft tissue surgery, and all things feline. She strives to keep in touch with current practice techniques, and can often be found researching cases on Veterinary Information Network and various journals.
Dr. Hickey received his undergraduate degree from Va Tech in 1969 and his DVM in 1973 from Kansas State University. Before moving to Virginia, Dr. Hickey worked in mixed animal practices North Dakota and Illinois. During his career he has owned three AAHA Accredited veterinary clinics. He has held leadership positions in numerous professional organizations including being the president of the VVMA in 1989. In 1994 he was awarded the Va State Veterinarian of the Year, in 1997 the AAHA Southeast Regional Practitioner Award and he has been recognized for his service by two Virginia governors.
