Meet Our Team

Meet the friendly staff at Blackstone Animal Clinic!

Receptionists

  • Caroline Cumbea

Caroline joined the BAC family in 2016 as a pert time kennel assistant while still in school. Upon graduation from Kenston Forest High School, her hours and duties started expanding and never stopped! Caroline can do it all; kennels, vet assistant and reception. Her receptionist work started 'behind the scenes', but her outgoing personality and customer service skills made us realize 'we can't put Baby in a corner'!

Caroline is a Lunenburg native and country girl to the core. She loves riding, hunting, fishing and BIG trucks! She and her horse, Peyton, started out competing in the jumper division, but have expanded their talents to barrel racing, too. And if you see a big truck in the parking lot with a kayak and fishing poles in the back...yep, that's hers!

She says that the best part about working at BAC is the family friendly staff and sharing the love of helping animals with others.

  • Donna Orange

Donna joined the Blackstone Animal Clinic team in 2011, as one of our receptionists.  She grew up and still lives in Blackstone; with her husband, a Chihuahua, Doodle Bug, and their calico cats, currently numbered at five.  Working at an animal clinic, though, that number is subject to change at any time. She previously operated a wonderful cat rescue called Critter Care which is how Dr. Carr and she first became acquainted in 2003. Her hobbies include crafting, sewing, quilting, crocheting, and reading.  She also loves being outside in the warmer times of year working in the yard or flower garden, or relaxing with a good book on the patio.

  • Courteney Rife

Courteney and her husband, Hans, were long time clients of the clinic before we recruited her in 2011 as a receptionist. She graciously accepted and has been providing excellent customer service and organizing our team and files ever since.

Courteney's husband, Hans, is our much appreciated IT go to guy and fixer of all things computer related. If we can find job opportunities for their many feline companions, we will have the entire family on the payroll! Courteney is a William and Mary graduate and she considers herself lucky to be able to work in a place where her love of animals is fulfilled every day. When she is not working she cares for many wonderful cats and enjoys physical fitness. Courteney’s hobbies include reading, writing, animals, and mud runs.

  • Karissa Kyzer
    Receptionist/Vet Assistant

Karissa is a Lunenburg native who worked for Blackstone Animal Clinic while in high school. Prior to graduation she moved to Richmond, where she began working at Church Hill Animal Clinic. She stayed with Church Hill, learning all aspects of the Veterinary Clinic world until 2019, when Karrisa became engaged, moved back to Crewe and came home to BAC.

Karissa can be found anywhere in the clinic, from the kennel, to assisting our Head Technician, Tammy, and our doctors, right up to the front desk.

Karissa and fiance, Lucas Lloyd, share their home with three dogs, Louie the Chihuahua, Chance the Pit Bull mix and Ziva the Mastiff mix. Creature the cat, keeps them all in line!

Office Manager

  • Karen Wilson
    Office Manager

Karen Wilson joined the Blackstone Animal Clinic family in 2004, bringing with her 6 years of veterinary office experience and 20 years of customer service experience. An animal lover since she could walk, Karen was thrilled to pursue a second career where she could draw upon her customer service skills and enter the veterinary world. She has found her “furever” home at Blackstone Animal Clinic, where she is blessed to have wonderful co-workers and clients.

A Virginia native, she and her husband, Tony, reside on a small farm in Victoria with four horses, three goats, two dogs and two cats. Both are avid horse enthusiasts and Cowboy Fast Draw competitors. While Karen spent 20 years in the horse show arena, she now enjoys trail riding on her Tennessee Walker, Duke, the Wonder Horse. Her most exciting shooting accomplishment was winning the 2016 Women’s Eastern Territorial Championship. She has won the  Virginia Peacemakers Women’s Club Champion for two consecutive years and has held the club’s Top Gun award for 4  years.

Head Technician

  • Tammy Shumaker

In other words, she directs the show in the back half of the hospital! Tammy is a native of Buckingham,Va and now resides in Farmville. She received both her undergraduate degree in Biology and her Master’s degree in Environmental Studies from Longwood College. Tammy worked with Dr. Carr in Appomattox during her college years and they reunited to open Blackstone Animal Clinic in 2003. Tammy shares her home with three fine hounds, a Chihuahua, several special needs cats and a sheep!

Veterinarian Assistants

  • Ann Ingram

Ann is a native of Winchester, VA, and is a graduate of John Handley High School.  She received her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Longwood College (University). She is retired from teaching and has been a loyal and very hardworking team member since 2009.  She is our “go to” new employee trainer, partially because of her teaching temperament and knowledge, but primarily because she will make sure they learn how to do it right!

Taylor, a native of Keysville VA, worked in the animal field for several years before joining our team.  Her previous job provided her with excellent animal work experience enabling her to adapt quickly to our clinic management and patient care. Taylor loves learning more about animals each day and she also enjoys reading, listening to music, taking her dog, Kahlua, to neat fun places, and spending time with her friends and family. She now resides in Crewe with Kahlua, and her cat, Willa.

Amber joined the team in 2016 and brought with her 6 years of very helpful veterinary clinic experience to BAC.  We appreciate the long distance she travels to work as well and her attitude. Amber easily connects with and reassures both clients and pets. The veterinary world is her passion and she is pursuing a licensed veterinary technician degree.  At home Amber has 15 dogs, 9 cats and two horses.
