Dr. Hickey received his undergraduate degree from Va Tech in 1969 and his DVM in 1973 from Kansas State University. Before moving to Virginia, Dr. Hickey worked in mixed animal practices North Dakota and Illinois. During his career he has owned three AAHA Accredited veterinary clinics. He has held leadership positions in numerous professional organizations including being the president of the VVMA in 1989. In 1994 he was awarded the Va State Veterinarian of the Year, in 1997 the AAHA Southeast Regional Practitioner Award and he has been recognized for his service by two Virginia governors.
Dr Hickey is the current Vice President of the Jack Russell Terrier Club of America. He and his wife, Sally, breed and train Jack Russells and compete with them in Jack Russell Trials. They have six children, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
