Meet the friendly staff at Blackstone Animal Clinic!

Receptionists

  • Donna Orange
    Head Receptionist

    Donna joined the Blackstone Animal Clinic team in 2011, as one of our receptionists.  She grew up and still lives in Blackstone; with her husband, a Chihuahua, Doodle Bug, and their calico cats, currently numbered at five.  Working at an animal clinic, though, that number is subject to change at any time. She previously operated a wonderful cat rescue called Critter Care which is how Dr. Carr and she first became acquainted in 2003. Her hobbies include crafting, sewing, quilting, crocheting, and reading.  She also loves being outside in the warmer times of year working in the yard or flower garden, or relaxing with a good book on the patio. 

  • Courteney Rife

    Courteney was a long time clients of the clinic before we recruited her in 2011 as a receptionist. She graciously accepted and has been providing excellent customer service and organizing our team and files ever since.  

    Courteney is a William and Mary graduate and she considers herself lucky to be able to work in a place where her love of animals is fulfilled every day. When she is not working she cares for many wonderful cats and enjoys physical fitness. Courteney’s hobbies include reading, writing, animals, and mud runs.

Office Manager

  • Karen Wilson
    Office Manager

    Karen Wilson joined the Blackstone Animal Clinic family in 2004, bringing with her 6 years of veterinary office experience and 20 years of customer service experience. An animal lover since she could walk, Karen was thrilled to pursue a second career where she could draw upon her customer service skills and enter the veterinary world. She has found her “furever” home at Blackstone Animal Clinic, where she is blessed to have wonderful co-workers and clients.

    A Virginia native, she and her husband, Tony, reside on a small farm in Victoria with five horses, one goat, two dogs and three cats. Both are avid horse enthusiasts and Cowboy Fast Draw competitors. While Karen spent 20 years in the horse show arena, she now enjoys trail riding with friends. She has a gaining interest in Trail Obstacle training. Her most exciting shooting accomplishments are winning the 2016 Women’s Eastern Territorial Championship and the 2021 Women's Virginia State Championship. She has won both, the Virginia Peacemakers Women’s Club Championship and the club’s Top Gun award multiple times.

     

Head Technician

  • Tammy Shumaker
    Head Technician

    Tammy Shumaker is our head technician. Her duties cross a vast area of skill sets including inventory management, surgery preparation and assistance, laboratory analysis and in-patient care. In other words, she directs the show in the back half of the hospital! Tammy is a native of Buckingham,Va and now resides in Farmville. She received both her undergraduate degree in Biology and her Master’s degree in Environmental Studies from Longwood College. Tammy worked with Dr. Carr in Appomattox during her college years and they reunited to open Blackstone Animal Clinic in 2003. Her hobbies include watching Roger Federer play tennis, softball, bowling, jewelry crafting and stained glass designing. Tammy shares her home with three fine hounds, a Chihuahua, several special needs cats and a sheep!

Veterinarian Assistants

  • Karissa Lloyd
    Vet Assistant

    Karissa is a Lunenburg native who worked for Blackstone Animal Clinic while in high school. Prior to graduation she moved to Richmond, where she began working at Church Hill Animal Clinic. She stayed with Church Hill, learning all aspects of the Veterinary Clinic world until 2019, when Karrisa became engaged, moved back to Crewe and came home to BAC. 

    Karissa can be found working hard in the clinic, from the kennel, to assisting our Head Technician, Tammy, and our doctors. She applies her experiences to her online learning from Penn Foster's Veterinary Technician Program.

    Karissa and husband, Lucas, share their home with three dogs, Louie the Chihuahua, Chance the Pit Bull mix and Ziva the Mastiff. Creature the cat, keeps them all in line!

  • Kathryn Fereday
    Vet Assistant

    Kathryn joined our staff in January of 2021. She recently gained her Degree in Agriculture with a Pre-Veterinary focus from Murray State University. She hopes to continue her education and one day reach her ultimate goal of becoming a Veterinarian. She enjoys working in an atmosphere where she can learn all aspects of the veterinary world. All the animals respond well to her kind and gentle manner.

    Originally from Chesterfield, she now resides in Kenbridge with her family and their canine pal, Charlie. Outside of work, Kathryn enjoys spending time with family and friends, listening to music and reading.

Veterinarians

  • Dr.
    Anne Carr

    Dr. Anne Wells Carr is a 1990 graduate of Virginia Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech.  She and her husband Ron, have three boys, Nick, Ben, and Jay.  She opened Blackstone Animal Clinic in 2003 and moved to the more spacious facility in 2014. Her professional areas of interest include preventative medicine, surgery and behavioral medicine.    Outside of work she enjoys watching her boys play sports, relaxing at the lake and cheering on her Hokies!  She considers it a tremendous honor to work with talented veterinarians and a dedicated, trustworthy support staff  to offer the best pet care in our area.

  • Dr.
    Anne Oswald

    Dr. Oswald is originally from New Jersey but has lived in Virginia for 25 years.  She holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from UVA and her DVM from Va Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine at Va Tech, Class of 2002.  She has concentrated on small animal practice since graduation.  Her special interests include emergency/critical care, soft tissue surgery, and all things feline.  She strives to keep in touch with current practice techniques, and can often be found researching cases on Veterinary Information Network and various journals.

    Sarah Nash
    Veterinarian

    Dr. Sarah Nash is a proud graduate of The Ohio State University. She and husband, Parker, also a veterinarian, live in Powhatan and have two sons. Their oldest graduated from the Air Force Academy in Colorado in 2021. The family enjoys hiking and pretty much any activity that gets them outdoors! They have recently become 'RV'ers' so they can explore even more. Their current canine companions are Bo, a large Wire Haired Terrier Mix and puppy, Buck, a German Shorthaired Pointer.

    Kelsie Faulkenberry
    Veterinarian

    Dr. Faulkenberry grew up in Texas. She received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Oklahoma State University. It was there she met her husband, Lane. They have one adopted son, Levi. After graduating from vet school in 2020, the family moved to Virginia and have loved it ever since.

    'Dr. K' loves learning new things as a veterinarian and she specifically enjoys surgery. Outside of work, she loves reading and spending time with her family which also includes dogs, cats, a rabbit, and a bird. She is grateful to get to do what she loves at work and at home.
